July is the Seventh Month in our current calender, but was the Fifth
Month in the Roman calender, which was called, Quintilis, which meant
'fifth'. In 46 B.C., Julius Caesar gave Quintilis 31 days. Sometime
later, the Roman Senate renamed the month, Julius, in Caesar's honor,
from which we get July.
This month's flower is the Water Lily and the gemstone is a Ruby.
Disneyland opened on July 17, 1955 (Happy 50th anniversary, Mickey!)
The Dog Days of summer begin on July 3rd, which are ruled by the Dog
Star, Sirius and herald the hottest part of the year, in the Northern
Hemisphere.
July seems to have been a great time of year for claiming Independence.
Aside from our own Independence Day, celebrated on July 4th (when the
Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence in 1776),
other countries which claim July for independence are, Canada Day, July
1, Venezuela, July 5, Argentina, July 9, France's Bastille Day, July 14,
Belgium, July 21 and Peru, July 28.
