A common depiction of the best-selling author.
Terry Goodkind is a best-selling fantasy author who recently published the last book in his series, the Sword of Truth, on November 13, 2007. Terry Goodkind is an author who has been loved by many for his unique writing style, relatable characters, and unforeseeable endings. He is an author who constantly keeps his readers on their toes and wholly engaged.
Terry Goodkind was born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1948 [1]. He was born with dyslexia, and even struggles with it to this day. His visions for storytelling, however, led him to eventually create and publish his first book, Wizard’s First Rule, in 1994.
The primary component for which his readers keep coming back for more is his ability to challenge the reader’s mind and to make them think about their own moral boundaries. By questioning the gray line between right and wrong, he forces the reader to question their own methods of defining right and wrong, thus compelling them to read on. In the event that the reader doesn’t feel like these gray lines are challenged, they are at least compelled to investigate the morals and motives guiding both the protagonists and antagonists of the story. Sometimes the reader may actually sympathize with a twisted character once they begin to understand the reasons for which they have become what they are; Terry humanizes them all.
This wonderful author has written 11 books in total, and one short story which is actually a prequel to the first novel. While his stories’ genre belongs in the fantasy section, he strives for so much more with his work. He has gone into detail in interviews about how he defines magic as an element of nature with an identity: it isn’t something that can be bent to the will of the conscious user, but, like all elements of nature, must be obeyed in order to be controlled. [2]
Goodkind has captured the attention of millions of readers and quickly became a New York Times bestseller. He even currently has plans with ABC Family and Disney to turn his first book, Wizard’s First Rule, into a TV mini-series directed by Sam Raimi, who also directed the movie Spider-Man. [3]
