Part II

Ace woke screaming and his eyes went wide with fear when he saw blood covering his apartment wall; it bubbled and oozed with a life all its own. He closed his eyes and opened them again. His walls were clean. He blinked several times as if to convince his mind it was a dream. Rolling from bed, Ace made his way to the bathroom to douse his face with cold water. He stood there for several minutes while he attempted to get a hold of himself.

“Good thing I didn’t take my sleep cocktail last night,” he mumbled. “Or that dream would have never ended.” All too leery to go back into his bedroom to check the wall, he got into the shower first to begin his normal morning ritual.

It was a slow drive to the precinct, he grudgingly handed the updated computer disk to the crime lab team for them to try and decipher. Making his way over to his office, he sat down and looked at the stack of papers on his desk, all of which needed attention. A sudden burst of activity erupted behind him; four or five police officers quickly rushed past. Ace rushed after them and, as he entered the dispatch room, he froze in horror.

Units were now being dispatched to the home of the police chief—he had been murdered. Ace tried to comprehend how the killer had enough time to orchestrate these killings in just mere hours. It was then he came up with a fearful thought. Not only had these murders been carefully planned, but the killer had fastidiously chosen his victims. This meant that Ace himself had also been carefully calculated into the maniacal scheme that was now unfolding.

Ace grabbed his coat and made his way to the front of the precinct. As he stepped out the door, a worried crime lab technician tried to stop him. Ace however, kept going. He arrived at Harris’ apartment and the neighborhood was in chaos. Upon what remained of the police chief’s tattered chest was sliced the word ‘WAR’. A sword had been plunged into the man’s stomach and on into the floorboards below. Predictably, an officer brought him the now familiar white envelope. On the front, scrawled in red ink, were the words ‘To Ace, my bitch’ and nothing more.

Ace knew this was the killer getting bolder, and it meant he wasn’t afraid of being caught. He was taunting the detective on purpose now. Once he was handed the letter he noticed other bodies about the scene. He was informed that these men had been killed by booby traps such as wired shotguns and explosives throughout the house.

After a long day of cleaning up carnage and making calls to families of the deceased he finally made it home, which now seemed more like a convenient cage for the killer to keep him in.

Again, Ace felt as if the computer keys almost protested the entry of yet another letter from the ‘Horseman Killer’ as he was now known. As he read, Ace noticed that the letter like, the envelope, was also hand-written in a very elegant cursive style.

Ace,

The third horseman comes; will you ever figure it out, my son?

If you don’t then your daughter will surely be disappointed that you won’t be able to see her this weekend, for you will have died by then.

The End is near and with it a new beginning comes, I will live, you will die.

You have twenty hours.

Love and Kisses,

Nocturnum Fatalis Finalis
